Dagohoy, Bohol

Dagohoy is a Philippine municipality in the center of the province of Bohol with 18,868 inhabitants ( census May 1, 2010 ).

Formation

The beginnings Dagohoys go back to Dr. Jose Rizal. After serving his sentence in exile in Dapitan, he came to Bohol to search an area establishing an agricultural settlement. About 25 years later, in 1920, was officially founded Colonia Agricula de Bohol, shortly called Colonia. Colonia was at that time in the territory of the municipality of Carmen. It was only on June 21, 1956 then was founded by a decree of then President Ramon Magsaysay an independent municipality, which received the name Dagohoy. It was suggested the name Dagohoy of the self derived from Bohol then Vice President Carlos P. Garcia in honor of the heroes boholanischen Francisco Sendrijas, also known as Francisco Dagohoy. Francisco Sendrijas was the founder and leader of a 85 years long-running rebellion in Bohol against the Spanish central government. The nickname comes from the Dagohoy phrase " dagon sa Hoyohoy " ( Cebuano, roughly translates to Talisman a gentle breeze ). The Talisman refers to an amulet Francisco Sendrijas wore and which should have protected him from his enemies. Since he could always escape his opponents, he was also rumored that he had the protection of a gentle wind, which carried him with ease from hill to hill or the other river bank.

Today the municipality of Dagohoy scoring 15 barangays were previously part of neighboring communities Carmen, Ubay and Trinidad.
