Dahlem-Dorf (Berlin U-Bahn)

The underground station Dahlem-Dorf is a Berlin U -Bahn station of the U3 of the Berlin U- Bahn in the district of Dahlem of the borough of Steglitz -Zehlendorf. The station went as the other railway stations in the Wilmersdorf - Dahlem - speed railway on 12 October 1913 in operation.

The Metro Station is located on the Königin-Luise- Straße opposite the Open Air Museum Dahlem. In the immediate vicinity are several institutes of the Free University of Berlin and the Museum Dahlem the National Museums in Berlin. The underground station is designed as a cut station with center platform.

History and Structure

The station was created as part of the construction of Wilmersdorf - Dahlem subway between Wittenberg Platz and Thielplatz in the south of Dahlem to open up the previously purely agricultural area to traffic. The station was built in the years 1912/1913 and designed by Frederick and William Hennings. Originally just a small gate house was provided as input to the subway. At the request of Wilhelm II, the reception building to fit the rural character of the Dahlem and was executed in the style of a North German farmhouse as thatched half-timbered house with a flowery front yard and picket fence as fencing.

Located at the northeastern end of the platform access building stands on a stone pedestal. The facade is designed as a white half-timbered with dark wood and is divided by a Fußwalm. The main building is surrounded by two pavilion-like side wings. The access to the station by two wrought iron studded wooden doors. Above the entrance doors are five windows and a tow dormer. The roof is designed as a half-hipped roof, the inside is lined with a trapezoidal brown coffered ceiling in the style of a knight's hall. The inside walls are covered with blue ceramic tiles, the floor has a mosaic pavement. Opposite the entrance is a dark green tiled staircase to the platform. Just like Podbielskiallee Metro Station this is covered by an inwardly sloping bitumen wooden roof. Two designed as a figure group timber seating by the Berlin artist Wolf van Roy refer to the nearby Museum of Ethnology since 1984.

After a fire on December 27, 1980, the station was rebuilt according to the original plans. From the original building a blue- tiled operating cottage has been preserved on the platform. At the south-west to Fabeckstraßenbrücke is by lift another access to the station. The station is considered accessible.

The underground station Dahlem-Dorf has been named in Japan in 1987 as the most beautiful subway station in Europe.

28 April 2012 to 2 clock the thatched roof of the entrance building burned again, so around 80 m² of the roof were destroyed. As a result of fighting and cleaning up the train service was interrupted for several days. The restoration of the roof took place in July 2013, for security reasons a replica of plastic was used instead Reetgras.
