Dahlonega is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is located in Lumpkin County and has 3,638 (2000) inhabitants.

The city's name comes from the word ' talonega ' back, which means gold in the language of the Cherokee Indians. About 1828 gold was discovered near Dahlonega for the first time what the first U.S. gold rush triggered. The city came while considerable wealth, which, expressed in the golden roof of the Dahlonega Mint, which is part of the North Georgia College today.
