Daidō Moriyama

Daido Moriyama (Japanese森 山 大道, Daido Moriyama, born October 10, 1938 in Ikeda, Osaka Prefecture) is one of the most important Japanese photographers of the second half of the 20th century.

Life

Moriyama studied design and subsequently Photography in Kobe, Japan. In 1961 he moved to Tokyo and joined the group of photographers VIVO, which, however, soon broke up. His first photo book " Japan, a theater " was released in 1968.

Work

His work has played a major role in ensuring that the Japanese photography prevailed internationally. In particular, the end of the 1960s and early 1970s, he created an influential and innovative photographic work. For its time, especially in Japan unusual, he concentrated on the edges of society, red light district and the street as a subject. It is noteworthy that he developed a technique to photograph without looking through the viewfinder on the road. These images have a direct and authentic. They had great influence on many young Japanese photographer, but also did not remain internationally without effect. Moriyama has published many illustrated books and his photographs have been published in many magazines.
