History

The Daily News was founded by Joseph Medill Patterson. He and his cousin, Robert R. McCormick were co- publishers of the Chicago Tribune and grandsons of Tribune founder Joseph Medill. As they could not agree on the editorial content of the Tribune itself, the two decided at a meeting in Paris that Patterson should launch a new newspaper in New York. On the way back met Patterson Alfred Harmsworth, the editor of the Daily Mirror, a London tabloid. Impressed with the advantages of small size, Patterson brought the Daily News out on 26 June 1919.

The Daily News was not an immediate success, in August 1919, the circulation was still just 26.625. However, found many commuters in New York to the small format easier to handle and as the readership grew steadily. At the first anniversary of the newspaper in June 1920, the circulation was over 100,000 and 1925 over a million.

In 1982 and re- introduced in the early 1990s during a newspaper strike, the Daily News almost ceased to operate. 1982 offered the parent company Tribune newspaper for sale. 1991 helped the millionaire Robert Maxwell of the newspaper to maintain its operation. This died shortly thereafter and in 1993 bought Mortimer Zuckerman, the newspaper and is still its editor.
