Dairy in the New Garden

The dairy farm in New Garden was built to plans by the architect Carl Gotthard Langhans on the shores of Lake Virgin at the northernmost tip of New Garden in Potsdam. The construction took from 1790 to 1792 Andreas Ludwig Krüger.

In the course of the installation of the landscape garden and the construction of the marble palace of Frederick William II a dairy was established to supply the court society. On the site of grazing cows gave milk for the production of butter and cheese.

1843/1844, Frederick William IV expand the building. Based on a design by the architect Ludwig Persius a second full storey was under the leadership of Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse placed and emphasizes the southwest corner by a tower. A battlements framed the roofs and gives the building a " Norman " character.

A second extension was made after 1861 with the engine or pump house, which was installed for irrigation of the new garden. At this technical renovation also includes the tall, slender chimney. The high basin for the water supply is up to the present time within the Belvedere on the Pfingstberg.

After 1918, a restaurant operation was set up in the building, which was one of the most popular pubs in Potsdam until the Second World War.

The occupation by the Red Army in late 1945 and the fire destruction of part of the building left a gastronomic use no more. In this ruinous state, the dairy was still, as in 1961, the Berlin Wall was built.

After the turn ran from 1991 renovation and restoration measures at the old building, which is used since 2003 as a brewpub.
