Dallas Area Rapid Transit

The Dallas Area Rapid Transit, DART short, is the public transport company of the city of Dallas, Texas, and twelve other municipalities in the surrounding area. In addition to the cities of Dallas Addison, Carrollton, Cockrell Hill, Farmers Branch, Garland, Glenn Heights, Highland Park, Irving, Plano, Richardson, Rowlett and University Park are members of the company.

The company operates since 14 June 1996, a standard gauge rail with two lines and in cooperation with the Fort Worth Transportation Authority, known as a Trinity Railway Express regional rail to Fort Worth. In downtown Dallas, the routes are built tram similar. The web is financed by a special tax which will have to pay all the residents of Dallas County.

The plans for the railway began already in 1987. Construction of the 32 km long base network was 1992. On 10 January and 31 May 1997, two additional sections of the red line were put into operation. Since September 1999, operates the Blue Line, which runs partially in the city center in a tunnel. Two other sections followed on May 6, and on 18 November 2002. Allow Deutsche Bahn had more than doubled within six years after opening its network to San Diego and was the second largest tram operation of the United States. The length of the network at that time was 45 miles (about 72 km ).

Another way to power magnification was created in 2001 with the purchase of three lines of the Union Pacific. These are the routes from Plano to Sherman, of Rowlett after Rockwall and Carrollton to Denton. Since these routes connect to existing or planned endpoints of the path, can be extended by a further 120 km to the construction of short connecting lines the network.

As decided in 2009, will be realized by 2013 two more sections with 67 kilometers in length. Then the Dallas / Fort Worth Airport on an extension of the Orange Line in the north- west with Downtown Dallas is to be connected.
