Dallas Wiens

Dallas Wiens (born 6 May 1985 in Fort Worth, Texas ) is the first American, in the 2011, a full face transplant was performed. It was the first such operation in the United States and the third in the world.

Accident at work

On 13 November 2008 in Vienna suffered severe facial burns. He had paint work performed at the Ridglea Baptist Church in Fort Worth, as its platform came with a high-voltage cable in contact. He was seriously injured in a helicopter in the Parkland Memorial Hospital brought.

Vienna had lost eyes, nose and lips. After several operations consisted only of his face transplanted skin. He could leave the hospital in the spring of 2009, in June 2010, he began to walk again.

Face transplant

In March 2011, a full face transplant in the " Brigham and Women's Hospital" in Boston was performed. The fifteen- hour operation was led by Bohdan Pomahac and required a team of 30 doctors, including eight surgeons. The sight of Vienna could not be restored, but he can speak and smell. The operation was paid for by the U.S. Department of Defense, the results will benefit soldiers with facial injuries. Wiens had no insurance when the accident happened. The new U.S. health care law allowed him to obtain insurance coverage.

On 9 May 2011 in Vienna had its first public appearance. Since the accident in 2008, about two dozen operations in Vienna were completed.
