Barbengründling ( Aulopyge huegelii )

The Barbengründling ( Aulopyge huegelii ) is a species from the order of carp -like. The species is an isolated standing endemic and was formerly assigned to the gudgeon, but now found near the river barbel. The Barbengründling lives at the bottom of fast-flowing streams, where the females lay their eggs singly in crevices. Overall, about its biology but little known. Kullander et. al. held Aulopyge huegelii mistaken for a synonym description Schizothorax curvifrons Heckel 1838.

Identifying

In contrast to the barbel and gudgeon of Barbengründling is entirely scaleless. It is usually 13 cm but not exceeding 25 cm long and has a laterally flattened body with under constant mouth opening and two pairs of barbels on the upper lip. The lateral line has an undulating shape with a yellow greenish color and marbling and dark points.

Occurrence

The Barbengründling has a very small area of ​​distribution: it is found only in fast-flowing karst waters of Croatia and Bosnia - Herzegovina. Such Endemicity carries the dangers of stock decline or extinction through engineering measures within the living bodies of water.
