Dalwhinnie distillery

The Dalwhinnie distillery is the highest producing distillery (326 m) in Scotland. It is located in Dalwhinnie, Inverness- shire, Scotland. The distillery buildings are sorted in the Scottish lists of monuments in the B category.

History

Dalwhinnie was founded in 1897 by John Grant, George Sellar and Alexander Mackenzie under the name Strathspey. The cost amounted to 10,000 pounds. In February 1898, production began.

After just a few months ago came the three but into financial problems, and in November 1898 took John Sommerville & Co. and A P Blyth & Sons distillery. They named them in Dalwhinnie and commissioned Charles Chree Doig with some changes to the still.

1905 acquired Cook & Bernheimer, then America's largest distiller, Dalwhinnie in an auction. This was the first time that a foreign company came into the possession of a Scottish distillery.

1919 bought MacDonald Greenlees & Williams Ltd.. led by Sir James Calder distillery. This company was taken over in turn by the Distillers Company Limited ( DCL) in 1926 - and in 1930 the Scottish Malt Distilleries ( SMD) passed.

In February 1934, a great fire destroyed almost completely Dalwhinnie. The distillery was only in 1938 returned to service.

1968 Malting Floors were closed. In 1986, a complete renovation of Dalwhinnie.

In 1991, a visitor center was built. From 1992 until its reopening in March 1995, the distillery for 3.2 million pound refurbishment and remained closed during this time.

Production

The water belonging to the Highlands distillery dates back to the Allt to t'Sluie. The malt comes from the United Distillers maltings in Burghead and Roseisle. The distillery has a mash tun (6.8 tons ) of stainless steel and six fermenting vats ( per 34,000 l), five of which consists of Siberian larch and one from Oregonkiefer ( Douglas fir). Is distilled in a wash still ( 17,000 liters ) and a spirit still ( 14,000 l) which are heated by steam.

Dalwhinnie has a visitor center and can be visited.

Samples

Dalwhinnie is one of the Classic Malts of United Distillers (now Diageo in Group risen ). In the series, there is a 15 year old single malt. In addition, there is the Distillers Edition, in which the Dalwhinnie ripens a few months in Oloroso sherry casks at the end of its shelf life.
