Damian Janikowski

Damian Janikowski (born 27 June 1989 Wrocław ) is a Polish wrestler. He became in 2011 vice-champion in Greco-Roman wrestling in the middleweight division.

Career

Damian Janikowski began in 1999 in his hometown with the rings. He focuses on the Greco-Roman style and is a member of the WKS Slask Wroclaw sports clubs. His first coach was Leszek Uzalowicz. Since 2001, he is trained by Józef Tracz. He is a member of the military and wrestles with a size of 1.80 meters at middleweight. He is also well known in German circles wrestler, because he was in the 2010/11 season for TSV Benningen (2nd Bundesliga) and is in the season 2011/ 12 for the TuS Adelhausen (1st Bundesliga) at the start.

The international career of Damian Janikowski already started in 2004. Nevertheless, his success at that time held at international championships at junior level still limited. The only medal he won in the participation in six international competitions at junior level, was the bronze at the Junior World Championship 2009 in Ankara at welterweight. However, he was doing already recognize his great potential that lies within them. In 2009, he took in Herning / Denmark for the first time participated in a World Championship for seniors. In the middleweight division he came here after two wins on the 8th Place.

At the European Championships 2010 in Baku, he defeated in his first fight the silver medalist of the Olympic Games in Beijing Zoltan Fodor of Hungary, but lost his next fight against Anton Babko Maly from Ukraine and therefore only came to 13th place. Much better it was for him then already at the World Championships this year in Moscow. He lost there after three victorious battles in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Christo Marinov from Bulgaria. In the fight for a world championship bronze medal he had also the multiple Russian champion Alexei Mishin beaten, but still came to a 5th place.

In 2011 he took part in the European Championships in Dortmund. There, he scored first three victories, but in the semifinals he was defeated by Wasil Rachyba from Ukraine on points. In the battle for the bronze medal he had to admit defeat against Christo Marinov and thus demonstrating again the 5th Place. His biggest success in his career celebrated Damian Janikowski then at the World Championship in Istanbul. He defeated there Pedro Jacinto Garcia Perez from Spain, Alan Chugajew from Russia, Eerik AAPS from Estonia and the 2009 world champion Nazmi Avluca from Turkey and was thus in the final battle against the World Champion from 2005 Alim Selimow from Belarus. This he delivered a balanced fight, but had to with 1:2 rounds at 3-3 points ( 0:1, 3:0, 0:2 ) to admit defeat. He was vice-champion in 2011.

At the 2012 Olympics in London, Damian Janikowski won a bronze medal. He had to deny it five fights. He defeated the former world champion Nazmi Avluca, Turkey, Amer Hrustanovic from Austria, Pablo Enrique Shorey Hernandez, Cuba, then lost to Olympic champion from 2004 Karam Ibrahim of Egypt, and eventually won the bronze medal with a win over Melonin Noumonvi from France. In 2013 he played American football for the Devils Wrocław. In March 2013 he was at the European Championships in Tbilisi at the start and lost there in the first round against Artur Schahinjan, Armenia, just on points (1:2 rounds, 6:6 points). Since Schahinjan not reach the final, he was eliminated and only came on the 15th Place.
