Dan Fogelberg

Daniel Grayling " Dan " Fogelberg ( born August 13, 1951 in Peoria, Illinois, † December 16, 2007 in Deer Isle, Maine ) was an American singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist.

Life and career

Dan Fogelberg was the youngest son of Lawrence Fogelberg and his wife Margaret (nee Young). His father was head of a school band at the Peoria Woodruff High School and Pekin High School. His mother was a pianist. After he had received from his grandfather, a Hawaiian guitar, he taught himself to play the guitar, even when, as well as playing the piano. Already at the age of 14 he was a music group ( The Clan ).

After graduating from Woodruff High School in 1969 Fogelberg studied theater arts and painting at the University of Illinois, but also made there still music. In 1971 he was discovered by Irving Azoff, who has also managed REO Speedwagon. Both traveled to California to try their luck there further. Fogelberg was a session musician and played among other things, the opening act for Van Morrison. His first album Home Free 1972 earned only lukewarm criticism, but his second work souvenirs with the hit single Part of the plan in 1974 was the breakthrough. Also the following albums was granted success and Fogelberg was briefly traded as a possible new member of the Eagles. In 1978, he first worked with jazz flutist Tim Weisberg.

After many more hits in the early 1980s, he has attracted the exceptional musicians, especially since he devoted himself to his later albums various musical styles and his songs dealt with environmental issues or the rights of Native Americans. His fan base remained the singer-songwriter continues to faithfully and gave Dan Fogelberg to his last tour in the summer of 2003 always full concert halls.

In 2001, the renowned guitar builder Martin Guitar Fogelberg built in honor of a signature model, the Martin D- 41DF Dan Fogelberg Signature Edition model.

Since 1982, Fogelberg lived in retirement on a ranch with a private recording studio in Colorado, most recently with his third wife, musician Jean Fogelberg Meyer. In May 2004, prostate cancer was found in him. Although the disease was with hormone therapy, the cost of which he had to finance the sale of his ranch, are temporarily stopped, Fogelberg died in December 2007, but in his recurring cancer.
