Dan Karabin

Dan Karabín ( born February 18, 1955 in Nitra ) is a former Czechoslovak wrestler and winner of the bronze medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow in free style at welterweight.

Career

Dan Karabín comes from Nitra in Slovakia, where he began as a teenager with the rings. After his talent was recognized, he was delegated to the Police Sports Club Rudá Hvězda Prague, where he became one of the best Czechoslovak freestyle wrestler after the 2nd World War. Already in the junior age he belonged to the world's elite, such as his victory at the Junior European Championships 1974 in Haparanda welterweight and his 2nd place at the Junior World Championship 1975 in Haskovo, also welterweight prove.

Dan also managed the transition to seniors seamlessly, because at the European Championship 1975 in Ludwigshafen, he immediately took 2nd place. He was only the Soviet all-rounder Pawel Pinigin inferior and defeated in an intermediate round fight even the German freestyle artist Adolf Seger. Even more successful he was at the European Championships in 1976 in Leningrad, where he defeated the two German competitors Alexander Senn from the FRG and Fred Hempel from the GDR and despite losing to Marin Pârcălabu from Romania became European Champion. Bad luck Dan then at the Olympic Games the same year in Montreal, because after two victories, he injured himself in the third battle against the Yugoslavs Kiro Ristov and had to retire.
