Dan Namingha

Dan Namingha (* 1950 in Keams Canyon, Arizona ) is one of the most important Native American artist of North America. The contemporary painter and sculptor belongs to the Hopi and combines tradition with modern art.

Family and Education

Dan Naminghas great-grandmother revived in the early 20th century, the tradition of Hopi pottery new. His grandmother, his mother and his sister are well-known potters today. Dan Naminghas grandfather and uncle have become known as carver of Kachina figures.

Namingha studied at the University of Kansas, the Academy of American Art in Chicago and at the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe ( New Mexico), where he lives today.

Work

The width of the habitat of the Hopi Indians and their symbols are mirrored in Naminghas paintings and sculptures. You determine themes and forms of his works and express themselves in all colors such as mustard yellow, purple, turquoise, red and black used by him. Back in 1979, wrote the San Francisco Chronicle on the occasion of an exhibition Namingha:

" Dan Namingha is probably the most talented, most original and most important Indian artists in America today. This speaks of the grandeur of its abstractions and out of the way as the nature (and its traditions ) makes in his very creative imagination advantage ... "

Exhibitions and Collections

Namingha has participated in a number of solo and group exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe. In summer 2012 he exhibited also in Germany. His paintings, drawings and sculptures are in the portfolio of many important public and private collections, including the National Museum of American Indian Art of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, art museums like the one in San Francisco, Denver or Dallas, the Harvard University Fogg Art Museum in Boston as well as collections such as NASA or the U.S. Department of the Interior. Being with 3 × 9 m largest painting hangs in the Phoenix airport.
