Dan Petersen

Dan Sigvald Petersen ( born May 6, 1972 in Odense) is a Danish former football player.

Club career

Petersen began his career in the youth of his home club Odense BK, where he matured into one of the greatest talents of the club. After only half a year as a professional player, he was brought in a double pack with its already established team-mate Johnny Hansen of coach Leo Beenhakker at Ajax Amsterdam.

Ajax Amsterdam

At Ajax he came in consequence, in contrast to Hansen at Beenhakker, as well as under his successor, Louis van Gaal, despite tough competition in the form of John van ' t Schip and Marc Overmars, mainly as a right winger in the traditional 4-3-3 system to considerable operating times and gave some talent samples. His preferred position as a key offensive player was permanently assigned to Dennis Bergkamp and Aron Winter, in which there was no pass for him. However, during his three years at Ajax he remained injury-free in any season, so he was never able to win a regular place over a longer time. After the retirement of Bergkamp Van Gaal planned with Petersen as his successor in the offensive center, but he lost his place again due to an injury to the former talent Jari Litmanen. As a result, it remained only the bench, as Van Gaal set despite the change of Overmars on the left winger, right on the Neuverpflichteten Nigerians Finidi George. Petersen came by it only three times throughout the entire game and had time to use when fit most satisfied, with the Joker role. After the season 1993/94 Van Gaal was then ready to give the injury-prone talent, prompting him Arsène Wenger brought to AS Monaco in France.

AS Monaco

Due to its technical capabilities and variable applicability, Petersen embodied Wenger for the optimal replacement for the previously delivered veteran Jerome Gnako. As a result, he received a regular place in his preferred position in central midfield or as a right winger and graduated in offensive alliance with Youri Djorkaeff, Sonny Anderson, Victor Ikpeba, Mickaël Madar and Enzo Scifo a strong debut season. Monaco had the second-best offensive behind champions FC Nantes, Petersen was promoted with ten goals this season as the third top scorer of his club.

The following season brought him again one of his susceptibility to injury. While the away defeat against Racing Strasbourg on 24 November 1995, he suffered a serious knee injury and fell to the closing stages of the season off. For 1996/ 97, he started again as a regular in the Championship, before he again in November, this time in the away game against Olympique Marseille, seriously injured and remained until the end of the season convalescent. After he then picked up his second national championship after 1994 with Ajax, Monaco did not extend his contract due to his precarious physical condition. As a result, he joined together with Scifo to Belgium for RSC Anderlecht.

RSC Anderlecht

In Anderlecht is a powerful offensive triangle hoped consisting of the Dutch Gaston Taument and Petersen outside and Scifo as the central playmaker, but this never came to pass. Petersen presented over the entire season in a poor physical condition and could not build on his old class, Taument was permanently injured and only came to seven games of the season. Anderlecht finished the season a disappointing fourth place in the table and then tried Petersen, who had also once again injured end of the season to give back. During the summer transfer period then failed an already vermeldeter as fixed change to the English second division club Sheffield United on a failed fitness test, which he had to remain constrained dimensions at Anderlecht. There coach Arie Haan had no more use for him, and he had to sit out his contract without further use of the entire season.

End of career

Due to its good reputation in France, he was then again a contract with first division side SC Bastia. As a result, he completed despite permanent pain his only second injury-free season, but without shine. 2000/ 01 he fell out of the entire season and tried in the last game of the season in the 1-3 away defeat against Lens once again making a comeback when he came off the bench in 59 minutes of play. 2000/ 01 he came in nine games for the B team from Bastia to use, in which he was able to achieve four goals before he finally finished his playing career at the age of 30 years due to chronic pain.
