Dan Reed Network

Dan Reed Network is a founded by Dan Reed and Dan Pred 1984 American rock band from Portland, Oregon, which became known in Germany especially by their hits Get To You and ritual (both 1987). 2007, the group was honored by inclusion in the Oregon Music Hall of Fame.

History

Dan Reed ( born on February 17, 1963, Portland, Oregon) Dan Pred learned in high school in Aberdeen, South Dakota, know. After some time at Northern State University, where both were studying music, they went back to Portland in 1984 and formed the group which received the name Dan Reed Network. In 1985, she released the single Eye On You ( Tandees Records ), the only known recording, can be heard on the original keyboardist Jeff Siri. The single was a little later part of the compilation Pride Of Portland, which should bring in donations for the starving in Africa in the style of USA for Africa, but only local artists from the Portland region presented and was sold only there. Dan Reed sang the title song Pride of Portland a line of text. In 1986 she took her first record, a six track EP called comprehensive Breathless, on, from a song, namely, Steal Me, the number - one single on the local music radio station Z -100 in Portland was. Eye On You was also included on the EP, but was re-recorded with keyboardist Rick DiGiarllonado.

At this time, the band consists of Dan Reed (vocals and guitar), Brion James was (guitar), Melvin Brannon II ( bass), Dan Pred (drums) and Rick DiGiarllonado (keyboards). The different lineages of group members ( Reed has German, Hawaiian and Native American ancestors, James and Brannon have African-American roots, while Pred and DiGiarllonado have Eurasian ancestry) were reflected in the music that was basically true hard rock, but always elements of Soul, funk and jazz included. DiGiarllonado was soon replaced by Blake Sakamoto on keyboards; Sakamoto had returned from Los Angeles, where he had played in the group Dear Mr. President.

Dan Reed Network quickly made mainly through live performances a name. The Washington Post described the appearance of the group that " their audience with an unusual mix of heavy-metal -like rock, sharpened by radio and lots of rock and roll, very easy wins. With the help of Derek Shulman, the band received a recording contract with Mercury Records, which took over management of the German -born concert promoter Bill Graham. In the winter of 1987 the group released their Bruce Fairbairn in the Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver -produced debut album, Dan Reed Network. The first single, Ritual, cracked the Billboard Top 40 ( # 38 on May 7, 1988) and ran on MTV USA on heavy rotation. The song stayed a total of eleven weeks on the Hot 100

The lack of promotion for the album disabled a resounding success in the U.S. ( No. 95 on the Hot 100 ). Def Leppard 's Hysteria did not achieve the hoped-for Mercury / Polygram sales and therefore the label withdrew newer artists the support in order to focus on the re- establishment of the British rock band on the American market. Ironically, it was Def Leppard 's manager Cliff Burnstein and Peter Mensch, the Dan Reed Network offered the role of Anheizers for the last part of the Hysteria tour in the U.S. if they would change in return for their management company Q Prime. The band was initially reluctant to dismiss Graham, but the beginning of 1989, they signed a management contract with Q- Prime and enjoyed their greatest success in the United States.

The second album of the band Slam, was produced by Nile Rodgers, who managed to capture the live sound of the group, thus creating a more authentic Dan Reed Network album, as it was still too smooth -produced debut album.

In the winter of 1989, the group toured as support for Bon Jovi on the New Jersey tour. In Germany this package was to be seen at the following locations:

The success of this tour led before to the fact that the Rolling Stones Dan Reed Network chose to take over the main support for their first tour in ten years, the Urban Jungle / Steel Wheels tour through Europe and the UK in the summer of 1990, so Dan Reed Network suddenly tens of thousands of rock fans played, among other things, on 13 and 14 August in Berlin- Weissensee, at that time still belonged to the GDR, and August 16 in Gelsenkirchen Park Stadium.

In addition, Dan Reed Network were seen on two German festivals, including David Bowie and Midnight Oil occurred, namely on the Schüttorf Open Air on September 1 and at the festival in Ulm on September 2, 1990.

The third album of the band, The Heat (1991 ), was re-created, with the exception of the song Money ( a cover version of Pink Floyd song) by Bruce Fairbairn.

It was 15th place in the UK charts at the same time the most successful album of the band in the UK. In the U.S., however, had still no idea how to Dan Reed Network promote and market, so that the Heat did not show up there in the charts. The band continued without the support of their record company and denied ( as support for the Baby Animals ) a tour of Australia. The following tour through Europe and the UK in the summer of 1993 was also its last. The last concert of the band took place on August 8, 1993 at Club The Garage in London. In October, members of Dan Reed Network began to focus on other projects and tasks, were, however, agreed only to interrupt the common career, but does not dissolve the band.

Melvin Brannon was a member of the band to Stevie Salas and was between 1996 and 1999 involved in the production of six albums, Brion James worked with Amanda Hayley.

There are several demos, notably by Dan Reed, recorded 1992 for the follow-up album to The Heat. None of the recorded title is found, however, in later publications again.

Between 1993 and 2002, the compilation Laben The Best of Dan Reed Network were - Mixin 'It Up (1993 ), Live at Last! Halfway Around the World and The Collection ( 2002) published. Twelve years later, on 9 January 2014 appeared the help of a crowdfunding campaign financed album Anthology.

Soundtracks

The music by Dan Reed Network was also part of movie soundtracks. These included Poison Ivy - The deadly embrace ( The Salt Of Joy & Let It Go ), The Cutting Edge - The Cutting Edge (1992, baby Now I) and Excessive Force - In the bottom of violence (1993, Mixin 'It Up; also two solo tracks by Dan Reed, namely Welcome To The Real Life (written by Dan Reed and Traci Kiss) and Burn With Me, both sonically remind strongly of Dan Reed Network).

Cover versions

Besides the aforementioned Pink Floyd Cover Money Dan Reed Network also took its own version of the hit You Can Leave Your Hat On on.

But it also Dan Reed Network - songs have been recorded by other artists: 1997 was released in Australia a compilation called A Bouquet of Barbed Wire, on which the gothic rock band meridian was represented with the Network hit ritual. In addition, the guitarist Neil Zaza published in 2004 his version of Forgot To Make Her Mine on his album Melodica. This instrumental recording was already around the year 2001 and was recorded with Blake Sakamoto, Daniel Pred, Brion James and Melvin Brannon. Unfortunately, it did not succeed Neil Zaza, Dan Reed for a spoken intro ( "Hey Neil, gimme some of thatthere guitar", which occurred also in the original song ) to win. On the recordings Rob Daiker was involved, which still operates today with Dan Reed together and co-producer of his album Coming Up For Air is.

New activities

2007 Dan Reed Network was inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. Dan Pred and Blake Sakamoto accepted the honor.

On 31 December 2012, the band played for the first time since 1993 back together. It should be a one-time appearance on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the group. In March 2013 Dan Reed announced after the release of his album Signal Fire that Dan Reed Network for October 2013 scheduled another appearance, which should take place in the UK. In July 2013 Dan Reed announced via Facebook that the band between the 10th and the 19th of October of the year in total will complete five appearances in Europe, of which two ( Mannheim and Hamburg) in Germany. During this tour, many concerts were recorded, some of the recorded tracks were used for the 2014 released album Anthology.

Trivia

  • According to rumors, the band purchased their first equipment of a $ 10,000 lottery prize.
  • Dan Reed took for the basketball team Portland Trail Blazers to a promo song (" Fight Song " ) called Bust a Bucket, where the players Kevin Duckworth, Terry Porter, Jerome Kersey and Buck Williams participated. The title was only offered in the area around Oregon on cassette and sold over 30,000 times.
  • Dan Reed became partner in 1999 and co-manager of the blues and rock clubs " Key Largo " in Portland, which was later renamed " OHM Nightclub " and both bands and DJs a stage bot.
