Dan Isaac Slobin ( born March 7, 1939) is an American psychologist and linguist.

Life

Slobin studied at the University of Michigan psychology and in 1960 was awarded the Bachelor of Arts degree summa cum laude. For the Master of Arts ( 1962), he moved to Harvard University, where he received his doctorate in 1964 on social psychology. In the same year he went to the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught until his retirement in 2004 and conducted research.

Research

Slobin research in the areas of first language acquisition, linguistic relativity and sign language. Particularly well known he was through his typological work on verbalization of motion events. It is especially his theory "Thinking for Speaking " of meaning. This deals with thinking as a process, rather than just the spirit and speaking, rather than the language. In addition, for the first time is described that thinking affects language and vice versa. Slobin 1996 described the native language as the basis for the individualized thought process in any language. "Satellite -framed " and " verb -framed " distinction is also made between two types of languages. Such a satellite would be, for example, in English " Other people " (for " He ran into the house. " ), An example of a verb - framed sentence would be in French " Il est entré la maison en courant ". This describes and emphasizes an appendix - "en courant " - the way of the movement ( rennend ). Emanuel Bylund and Scott Jarvis are discussed in more detail the theory.
