Dan Snyder

Dan Snyder ( born February 23, 1978 in Elmira, Ontario; † 5 October 2003 in Atlanta, Georgia) was a Canadian ice hockey player ( center ), who played from 2000 to 2003 for the Atlanta Thrashers of the National Hockey League.

Career

Dan Snyder began his career in 1995 in the Canadian Junior Football League Ontario Hockey League with the Owen Sound Platers. Despite good performances, he was drafted by any NHL team. Overall, he played four years in the OHL, of which his last with 94 points was his best.

1999 he was awarded a contract with the Atlanta Thrashers, the first for him two years to their IHL farm team, the Orlando Solar Bears, sent. 2000/ 01 he completed his first two games for Atlanta in the NHL. In 2001, the IHL disbanded and Snyder joined the American Hockey League with the Chicago Wolves. He got some way further inserts for Atlanta. In the season 2002/ 03 he moved forward another step. 36 times he was allowed to accumulate in the NHL, scoring 14 points.

On 29 September 2003, he was severely injured when the driven by teammate Dany Heatley Ferrari 360 Modena crashed into a wall. Both were thrown from the car. Snyder suffered a fractured skull and severe brain injury. He fell into a coma after emergency surgery. Six days later, he died on October 5, from injuries sustained in connection with an infection.

Dany Heatley had to answer in court and declared himself guilty of the death of Snyder. Heatley was sentenced to a suspended sentence of three years. Snyder's family forgave Heatley and remains closely associated with it.

The OHL named after Snyder's death their price they give every year to the humanitärsten players in Dan Snyder Memorial Trophy to offer.

During the season 2006/ 07 Snyder's parents traveled to every city in which an NHL team is established to inform people about the Dan Snyder Memorial Foundation and to raise funds. Also, players and teams contributed jerseys, bats and other signed objects in order to auction in favor of the charitable organization.

In Snyder's hometown of Elmira, the Dan Snyder Memorial Arena opened in 2009.
