Known worldwide, the village in 1930 as the destination of the salt march by Mahatma Gandhi. He marched with 78 followers from his Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad in the 386 km distant Dandi and raised there salt from the beach in order to protest against the British salt monopoly. The salt marsh is generally regarded as the beginning of the end of British rule over India.
