Danger Islands

The Danger Islands are a group of seven islands on the eastern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. The archipelago is 25 km to the southwest of the Joinville Island and extends from northeast to southwest. James Clark Ross discovered the island group on December 28, 1842 on his third voyage with the ships Erebus and Terror ( 1839-1843 ). Because they were hidden between the ice until he was almost run onto her, he called her Danger Islands. Darwin Island is the largest island of the group. It is approximately circular, has a diameter of about 1 km and is surrounded by steep, 80 m high cliffs. The smallest island is Dixey Rock, a 35 m high isolated rock pinnacle. The Heroina Island is the easternmost of the Danger Islands. She was named by the Argentine Antarctic Expedition of 1948/49, after the expedition ship Heroína. On Heroina there is the largest concentration of Adelie penguins on the island group, 300,000 pairs.

On the Platter - island living 7500-20000 Adelie Penguin breeding pairs. Furthermore, the Beagle Island, Comb Island ( also Peine Island ) and the Earle Island belong to the group of the Danger Islands. Halfway between the Danger Islands and the Isle of Joinville there are Scud skirt and Brash Island.
