Daniel Friderici

Daniel Friderici (* 1584 in small Eichstädt; † September 23, 1638 in Rostock ) was a German choirmaster, conductor and composer.

Life and work

Friderici came from a poor family and had at a young age to earn his own living as Kurrendesänger and chorister. He was trained by Valentin Haussmann and Friedrich Weissensee. In 1612 he enrolled at the University of Rostock, but was already appointed two years later by Count Anton Günther as a cantor to Oldenburg and moved in 1618 to the same position at the Marienkirche in Rostock. After he had finished his training there, he was appointed Kapellmeister of all Rostock churches. There he worked until he died in 1638 of the plague.

He made up some secular as well as sacred polyphonic vocal music of high quality, which afterwards became widespread during his lifetime and. With the Musica figuralis Friderici wrote a detailed practical teaching singing.
