Daniel Friedmann

Daniel Friedmann (Hebrew דניאל פרידמן; * 1936 in Palestine) is an Israeli politician. He was from February 2007 to March 2009 the Minister of Justice of the State of Israel.

Friedmann was born in a family that lives in the seventh generation in Palestine. He studied and received his doctorate at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and at the Harvard Law School.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Friedman was a professor of law at the University of Tel Aviv, where he was dean from 1974 to 1978. Subsequently, he taught at Harvard Law School, the University of Pennsylvania and Fordham University and at the London Queen Mary, University of London. Friedmann received a number of Israeli and international awards and is the author of numerous articles and various international treaties, both in Hebrew and in English.

Friedmann was a member of the now-defunct party Democratic Movement for the change and stood in 2003 on the list of candidates to the Knesset of Shinui.

On 6 February 2007 Friedman was appointed by Ehud Olmert, Minister of Justice. He succeeded in this office on Tzipi Livni. He is regarded as a critic of the Israeli judicial system and has previously explained to push for a reform of the system, after which the judges will be appointed to the Israeli Supreme Court.
