Daniel Gran

Daniel Gran ( May 22nd 1694 Vienna, † April 16, 1757 in St. Pölten ) was an Austrian painter of the Baroque. He was after a century of Italian dominance in Austria next Michael Rottmayr one of the first important painter of the German-speaking world.

Life and education

Gran was the son of Hofkochs Emperor Leopold I, among his ancestors were glass painters. He was sponsored by the House of Schwarzenberg, which is also a study tour in Italy financed him, where he studied in Naples especially in Sebastiano Ricci in Venice and Francesco Solimena. In his works, a vacillation between Venetian influence in the color and Neapolitan influence in the composition is to be noted. In addition to the princely house of Schwarzenberg and the courtyard was added as a principal; 1727 he was appointed court painter.

Since 1732, he led the ennobled form of his name: " Daniel le Grand ", or since 1736 the title of " della Torre ". That it would have been a real ennoblement, in the absence of all documents is the nobility of the Vienna registry Gratialarchivs rather doubtful. Closer to that of the master title of nobility and coat of arms of an imperial ensign Nicholas Gran della Torre ( ennobled on 12 May 1621) successfully laid claim and had revived. A wrongful guide of titles of nobility and predicate would be unthinkable in the time and in view of the exposed position of the artist in society.

In 1894 in Vienna, Rudolf -Fuenfhaus ( 15th district ) was named the Grangasse after him.

Work

Towards the end of his career, the elements lose " baroque " ( Figure wealth, illusionism, Erlebnishaftigkeit ) more and more - Gran therefore considered an important precursor of the classicism.
