Daniel H. Hastings

Daniel Hartman Hastings ( born February 26, 1849 in Salona, Clinton County, Pennsylvania, † January 9, 1903 ) was an American politician ( Republican) and from 1895 to 1899 the 22nd Governor of the state of Pennsylvania.

Early years and political rise

After primary school, the young Hastings taught himself as a teacher, especially in the winter months, while he helped out in the summer on the family farm. Later he became head teacher at Bellefonte High School. After studying law he was admitted in 1875 as a lawyer.

Hasting quickly rose in the most important legal and social circles in Pennsylvania. He acquired interests in coal mines and banks. Under Governor James Beaver, he was head of the National Guard and went through the relief in a flood in Johnstown in 1889, a good name. In 1890 he sought the nomination of his party for the office of governor. He defeated a party rival. Four years later, he was not only nominated by his party, but also elected by the voters in the Office of the Governor.

Governor of Pennsylvania

Daniel Hastings began his four -year term on 15 January 1895. He was the first of a long series of Republican governors in Pennsylvania. A Democrat was elected to this office until the year 1934, George Howard Earle again. During his tenure, the Spanish-American War was launched by 1898. Governor had made ​​available to the Federal Government, both soldiers and material for this war. In 1897, the State Forestry Administration (State Forestry Commission ) was established. It was then that the Agriculture Committee was upgraded to a Ministry of Agriculture. In addition, in Hastings ' tenure, the tax legislation was changed. It is worth mentioning that the Capitol was destroyed by a fire in Harrisburg.

Hastings was not allowed to run for a direct re-election because of a constitutional provision in 1898. Therefore, he resigned from his post on 17 January 1899. After the end of his term he again worked as a lawyer. He died with almost 54 years on January 9, 1903. Hastings Daniel was married to Jane Armstrong Rankin, with whom he had two children.
