Daniel Kastler

Daniel Kastler ( born March 4, 1926 in Bandol ) is a French theoretical physicist.

Kastler is the son of Nobel Prize winner Alfred Kastler. He is now a professor emeritus of theoretical physics at the University of Aix -Marseille ( Luminy ), where he was a professor since 1977. With Rudolf Haag he founded in the 1960s, the "Local Quantum Physics " access for the mathematical description of quantum field theory ( Haag- Kastler axioms ). Later he worked on applications of operator algebras in statistical mechanics and in the 1980s with non- commutative geometry by Alain Connes (especially their applications in elementary particle physics, initiated by Connes ).

1984 Kastler was awarded the Prix Ampere of the French Academy of Sciences. He is a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen and the Austrian Academy of Sciences and since 1995 a member of the Leopoldina.
