Daniel Martin (politician)

Daniel Martin ( 1780 in Talbot County, Maryland, † July 8, 1831 ) was an American politician and from 1829 to 1830 and in 1831 Governor of the State of Maryland.

Early years and career

The exact date of birth of Daniel Martin is not known. However, it is believed that he was born around 1780. He attended St. John's College in Annapolis. Between 1813 and 1820 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Maryland. Politically, he joined the nascent Whig party. On January 4, 1829, he was elected by the Legislature of Maryland as the new governor.

Governor of Maryland

Martin's first term as governor ran between January 1829 and January 1830. During this time, he campaigned for staff cuts in public services and infrastructure improvements. This included mainly the expansion of roads and waterways. At the same time he advocated an improvement in the school system. In January 1830 he applied unsuccessfully for reelection. A year later he was but then again elected to this office. In his second term, which began on January 13, 1831, the prison system was reformed. After a serious illness Governor Martin died then in office. With his wife Mary Clare Maccubbin he had four children.
