Campaign against Bunning

2004 candidate Mongiardo, who is also Vice - Chairman of the Democratic Party of Kentucky was in 2003 against Republican incumbent Jim Bunning for a seat in the U.S. Senate for Kentucky ( Senator Class 3). When it became apparent that Mongiardo had quite chances to Bunning clearly transgressed in word and tone.

The conflict-ridden controversy spun out of control, as Bunning his Italian -born adversary described in such a way that "he remember one of Saddam Hussein's sons " ( "like one of Saddam Hussein 's sons. "). Given the great indignation among the public he fought off an apology. His subsequent behavior, such as his accusations against Mongiardo that this Bunnings wife had physically attacked and it had thereby suffered " green and blue spots", and the obvious use of a teleprompter in a televised debate, brought several media scholars to the conclusion Bunnings mental and emotional suitability for his office to question. Bunning stood about four million U.S. dollars for his campaign available, while Mongiardo had only $ 600,000 to have. Belatedly realized the Democratic Party, that in the face of Bunnings bizarre behavior had a real choice opportunity and increased Mongiardos budget with $ 800,000, which were mostly invested in commercials.

After a series of illegal campaign contributions, ugly homophobic attacks against Mongiardo and the large vote lead George W. Bush in the presidential election, Bunning narrowly won the election on 2 November 2004, which had previously held none of the election campaign, analysts possible.

In 2010, he had signaled to re-apply for a seat in the U.S. Senate; "Running Mate" by Governor Steve Beshear will now be Jerry Abramson, Mayor of Louisville. In the Democratic primary (Primary ) for the Senate election but was defeated by Mongiardo Attorney General of Kentucky, Jack Conway, relatively scarce. This in turn lost to Republican Rand Paul.
