Daniel Oliver

Daniel Oliver ( born February 6, 1830 in Newcastle upon Tyne, † December 21 1916 in Kew ) was an English botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Olive. ".

Life and work

Oliver's parents, Andrew and Jane Oliver of Benwell Hills, were Quakers. Daniel Oliver attended the Society of Friends' School in Brookfield, Wigton.

In 1858 he began to work at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. He was from 1860 to 1890 Librarian of the herbarium of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. At University College London, he was from 1861 to 1888 professor of botany.

Oliver was editor of several volumes of the Icones Plantarum Hooker's ( 1890-1895 ) work. But his most important work was the flora of tropical Africa, of which he published the first three volumes and was later continued by others.

Honors

In 1853 he was admitted to the Linnean Society in 1893 awarded him the Linnean Medal. In 1863 he was elected as a member ( "Fellow" ) to the Royal Society, in 1884, the Royal Medal awarded him.
