Daniel Purcell

Daniel Purcell [ dænjəl pɜ ː sl] (* 1664, † 1717 ( buried November 26 ) in London) was an English composer.

Life

Daniel Purcell was the younger brother or cousin of Henry Purcell. He is mentioned in 1679 as a chorister of the Chapel Royal. In his time as organist at Magdalen College at Oxford University from 1688 to 1695, he composed anthems and an Ode for St. Cecilia's the. He wrote on numerous songs and contributed music for the final Masque of the semi - opera The Indian Queen his brother. Between 1696 and 1707 he wrote incidental music for more than 40 stage works, among others, John Dryden, Thomas D' Urfey, Colley Cibber and Pierre Motteux. In 1700 he was awarded the third prize in a competition for the setting of William Congreve's masque The Judgment of Paris ( The Judgment of Paris ). 1713 Purcell was organist at the Church of St. Andrew's, Holborn, London.

His other compositions include 11 solo anthems, six cantatas, courtly odes and some instrumental works.
