Daniel Roth (Organist)

Daniel François Roth ( born October 31, 1942 in Mulhouse, Haut-Rhin ) is a French composer, organist and music teacher.

Life

Daniel Roth began his education at the Conservatoire of his native city of Mulhouse in Alsace. In 1960 he entered the Conservatoire de Paris, where he was awarded five first prizes. Among his teachers were, among others, Maurice Duruflé and Rolande Falcinelli. After completing his studies in Paris, he prepared himself with Marie- Claire Alain at international competitions before, of which he won five major, including the prestigious Grand Prix de Chartres in organ playing and improvisation in 1971. Thereafter, his international career began as a concert organist, improviser and educator.

In 1963 he became deputy his teacher Rolande Falcinelli at the Basilique du Sacré -Cœur Basilica in Paris, which he succeeded in 1973 as organist. 1985 Roth was appointed titular organist at St -Sulpice de Paris.

From 1974 to 1976 Daniel Roth Artist in Residence at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and organ professor at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC After professorships at the conservatories of Marseille (1973-1979) and Strasbourg (1979-1988) and the University of Music Saarland in Saarbrücken (1988-1995), he taught from 1995-2007 artistic organ playing and improvisation at the University of Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt am Main. He was also Artistic Advisor for the construction of the concert hall organ by Karl Schuke at the Philharmonie Luxembourg, whose inauguration he played in 2005.

Daniel Roth was appointed Chevalier de la Légion d' Honneur and Officier de l' Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Moreover awarded the "Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Organists ' and in 2006 he received the Prize of the European church music in Schwäbisch Gmünd.

Among his four children include the flutist and conductor François -Xavier Roth and violist Vincent Roth.
