Daniel Sutherland

Daniel Alexander Sutherland ( born April 17, 1869 in Pleasant Bay, Cape Breton, Iceland, Canada, † March 24 1955 in Abington, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1921 and 1931 he represented as a delegate, the Alaska Territory in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years

In 1876, Daniel Sutherland came with his parents to Essex in Massachusetts. There he attended the public schools. He then worked in a grocery store and later in the fish trade. In 1898, Sutherland moved to Circle in Alaska Territory. Sutherland was also active as a gold prospector and was part owner of a mining company. In 1909 he moved to Juneau.

Political career

Daniel Sutherland was a member of the Republican Party. Between 1912 and 1920 he was in the Senate of the territory and in 1915 he was its president. During World War II, he was part of the reserve of the U.S. Navy. Between 4 March 1921 and 3 March 1931, he completed five legislative sessions as a delegate of its territory in the U.S. House of Representatives. However, since Alaska was not an official state of the United States at that time, he also had no vote in Congress. In 1930, Daniel Sutherland gave up another candidacy.

During his time in Congress, he campaigned for the establishment of airmail for Alaska. In the 1930s, then put the plane in Alaska by as the main means of transportation. Sutherland spent the last decades of his life in Pennsylvania. From 1931 to 1950 he was a buyer for the procurement of materials of the Ogontz School. Daniel Sutherland died in 1955 in Abington.
