Daniel Thomas Barry ( born December 30, 1953 in Norwalk, Connecticut ) is an American former NASA astronaut. He was also a candidate in Survivor: Exile Iceland, a reality show on CBS. He is married and has two children.

Barry graduated in 1971 from Bolton High School in Alexandria ( Louisiana) and enrolled at Cornell University to study Electrical Engineering one, which he graduated in 1975 with a bachelor's degree as a graduate engineer. In 1977 he received a Master in Electrical Engineering and a Masters in computer science from Princeton University, where three years later received his doctorate in the same subjects. In 1982 he also received his doctorate in medicine at the University of Miami.

One training in rehabilitation medicine at the University of Michigan followed from 1985 a position as assistant professor at the city's Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, where he worked in the field of biotechnology. His area of ​​research was the transmission of biological signals, including signal process theory, algorithms and their application to specific biological problems. Barry has five patents, has over 30 articles in scientific publications published and was on the editorial board of two journals.

NASA selection

Barry was among 2,054 applicants selected by NASA and presented in March 1992 for the 14th astronaut training group. After a year of training, he completed his formal training as a mission specialist for space shuttle crews. In his time at NASA, he worked mainly on the development of the shuttle payloads in the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory ( SAIL). He was ombudsman for the Department of airworthiness and board member of the NASA Space Biomedical Research Institute ( NSBRI ).
