Daniel T. McCarty

Daniel Thomas McCarty ( born January 18, 1912 in Fort Pierce, Florida; † September 28, 1953 in Tallahassee ) was an American politician and the 31st Governor of Florida in 1953.

Early years and political rise

Daniel McCarthy visited the primary schools of his home and then studied at the University of Florida. After completing his studies, he worked in Fort Pierce as farmers and as a producer of citrus fruits. During the Second World War, he went into the U.S. Army on to the Colonel ( Colonel) and received many awards for his military merits. Already 1937-1941 McCarty was a member of the House of Representatives from Florida and 1941 he was even President ( Speaker) of this body. After the war he continued his political career. In 1948 he applied within the Democratic Party for the nomination for the office of governor. But this time, he was defeated by Fuller Warren. Four years later, he had more success. He not only won his party's nomination but also the subsequent gubernatorial elections.

Governor of Florida

McCarty's legislative session began on January 6, 1953. During his short tenure, he reformed the process for recruitment into the civil service and he also changed the procedure for the award of contracts by government contracts. He increased the teacher salary and promoted in general school policy. In addition, he initiated a program of assistance for the disabled. He was also a staunch opponent of oil drilling in the Everglades. However, a lot of time to carry out his reforms he had not. Already on 25 February 1953, he suffered a heart attack which made ​​it difficult to create in the following months, and from which he never recovered properly. He died in September at the consequences of infarction. Daniel McCarty was married to Ollie Brown, with whom he had three children.
