Danilo Hondo

Danilo Hondo ( born January 4, 1974 in Wilhelm- Pieck -Stadt Guben ) is a German racing cyclist since 1997 as a professional.

Career

Hondo greatest successes were numerous stage wins at the Peace Race (1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2006 ) and the Giro d' Italia ( 2001). 2002 Hondo became German champion during the German road championship in Buhl.

In 2005 Hondo seemed to be floating before his breakthrough; so he took second place at the spring classic Milan-San Remo and won two stages of the Spanish Vuelta a Murcia. A positive doping test during the Vuelta a Murcia in 2005 and the subsequent one-year competition ban, which was then extended to two years, seemed his sporting career to an end. On 17 March 2006, the ban was lifted temporarily.

On April 13, Hondo signed a contract until the end of 2006 with a buy-out clause at the German Continental team Lamonta. Previously, it was him and his manager Tony Rominger not been able to get a contract in the ProTour. To date, the team adhere to the code of honor " Code de Conduite ", prohibiting the employment of doping sinners UCI ProTeam one for at least two more years even after doping suspension. For Lamonta he ran very successfully and won in the following months repeatedly stages in small tours. At the end of the season he was number two overall in the UCI Europe Tour 2006 behind Nico Eeckhout.

After his playing career Hondo is planning the establishment of a cycling team.

Doping

2005

On 1 April 2005 it was announced that two A sample of the Vuelta a Murcia tested positive for Carphedon, two weeks later the B- sample confirmed this result. This is unusual in that Hondo was tested negative the day before. The following day Carphedon could be detected in his sample. The research concluded that the small amount found Carphedon could have been caused by contamination ( pollution ) by Danilo Hondo occupied by food or drink.

On 13 April 2005 Hondo was suspended only in accordance with the regulations of his team and then summarily dismissed. On 2 June 2005, the Swiss Cycling Federation imposed after a conviction by the Swiss sports court, the minimum sentence of one year lock. As the regulations normally provides for a two-year suspension and exclusion from the ProTour for a total of four years, so the UCI and WADA appealed revision at the International Court of Sport (CAS). Also presented Danilo Hondo, who wanted to obtain a complete acquittal, a motion to appeal. The CAS lifted on 10 January 2006 in the revision to the prejudice and issued despite the previously collected exculpatory arguments a two -year ban until 1 April 2007. Since Hondo was prohibited at the same time, because for 2 years to go after for a ProTeam, it was feared the end of his cycling career.

2006

According to a lawsuit filed by Danilo Hondo against that judgment lifted on 17 March 2006, the Swiss Federal Supreme Court that imposed by the CAS barrier in the context of a preliminary injunction until the final court decision completely. This was the first case in sports history that an ordinary court picked up a penalty imposed by the International Court of Sport doping suspension.

On 24 May 2006 was put into effect by a rapid procedure at the request of WADA previously repealed lock provisionally again, while Hondo had already announced new legal action. He had on 6 June 2006 success, as all lower court decisions were lifted again, and he is therefore entitled to start again.

2007

On 14 January 2007, the lock has been activated again, and was able to Hondo on 1 April 2007 incur no race to the end of his doping ban, but was allowed to start again afterwards. The original lock until April 1, 2007 was later extended on the basis of a recommendation of the CAS to the period from the Swiss canton of Vaud court (269 days), could deny a result of temporary injunctions race in Hondo. Until January 24, 2008 Hondo was locked.

Review of the doping allegations

To answer the question of whether so a really doping convicted athletes revoked by legal quibbles to justice, we refer to the following statement of the Heidelberg molecular biologist Werner Franke, who is considered one of the toughest and most high-profile critics of the professionals:

" Hondo had such an absurd low concentration Phenotropil, formerly Carphedon, in said urine, which could not act And it could not also act before because he was already the day before, when he had won a stage, controlled -. , And Although negative. Moreover, he may not have taken only on the eve of the substance that acts like a strong amphetamine, for then he would not get any sleep at night. (...) If it the next day before it the would have taken the race, he would indeed have benefited from it, but you should have found a much higher concentration in his urine. "
