Danilov Monastery

The Danilov Monastery (Russian Данилов монастырь ) in Moscow is the seat of the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church.

History

The monastery was founded in the late 13th century by Daniel of Moscow. It was not only a spiritual function, but also had military purposes as part of the town fortifications of Moscow. After the October Revolution of 1917, an umbrella factory and a prison was housed in the monastery. The ensemble was only in 1988, the 1000th anniversary of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Pimen to a request from I. again return to the church.
