Zebrafish ( Danio rerio)

Danio (synonym: Brachydanio Weber and de Beaufort, 1916) is a genus of danios ( Rasborinae ). The freshwater fish are found on the Indian subcontinent, Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia from Burma to the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra. They live in flowing and standing waters, sometimes in flooded rice fields. Some Danio species are popular aquarium fish; the well-researched zebrafish is a model organism in genetics and developmental biology.

Features

Danio species have an elongated, laterally slightly flattened body and reach a length of two cm to 8.5 cm. The fish are attractively colored, usually in blue and yellow colors. Females are less intensely colored than the males, are fuller and are slightly larger. The mouth is terminal or slightly above constantly. It is flanked by one or two pairs of barbels. The lateral line is reduced in contrast to the sidelines in the genus devario, more than enough to behind the anal fin or missing entirely. The dorsal fin has six to seven split -fin rays, the anal fin ten to 13, fewer than of the species devario.
