Danny Boy

Danny Boy is a very well known, especially in the English-speaking song in which it comes to say goodbye to a loved one and its recurrence. The original melody was probably the blind harper Rory Dall O'Cahan composed in the late 16th or early 17th century. In the 1850s, this tune was transcribed by Jane Ross and published under the name A Londonderry Air. The lawyer Fred Weatherly then wrote in 1910 an article who - Danny Boy.

In The Muppet Show, there is a version of the song, as in the episode of The Simpsons Moe's Tavern. In the talent show " The Glee Project ", the song by the Irish Damian McGinty, a member of the Irish band Celtic Thunder is sung.

Spreads are the arrangements that Percy Grainger has created under the title of Irish Tune from County Derry for various ensembles (eg for wind band).

It has been attempted in various ways to determine the exact circumstances of the farewell constellation described in the text; among other things, reference was made to the extract in a war or leaving Ireland during the great famine. The relationship of narrative person to the addressee " Danny" is not clear. Interpretations go from (usually adopted ) lover or fiance, mother, father, sister or even the grandfather (including as interpreted by Jimmie Rodgers in a duet with Johnny Cash) as protagonists.
