Danny Federici

Daniel Paul " Danny" Federici ( born January 23, 1950 in Flemington, New Jersey, † April 17, 2008 in New York City, New York ) was an American musician. His greatest successes came with the E Street Band at the American rock musician Bruce Springsteen.

Life and work

At the age of seven he was - similar to Bruce Springsteen - inspired by a television show, to learn an instrument. Only it was in his case, not the Ed Sullivan show and not the guitar, but the Lawrence Welk Show and the accordion. In the late 1960s ( the first time probably 1967) he met Bruce Springsteen in Asbury Park, where many young musicians tried to hold in various bands over water. Even in Springsteen's rock band "Steel Mill " Federici was there later in the " Bruce Springsteen Band" and since the early 1970s as a founding member of the E Street Band. From the band, he also got his nickname "Phantom " because he always remained virtually invisible on stage. His instruments were next to the accordion, the organ ( Vox Continental, Farfisa, Hammond B3) and occasionally to hear the chimes as in Badlands.

With Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Federici celebrated many successes, most certainly with the album Born in the USA and the subsequent world tour 1984/85. After Springsteen had the E Street Band in 1989 temporarily resolved to Federici dedicated entirely to his first family. Later he published an album called Flemington, instrumental jazz-rock. A second album with similar pieces, out of a Dream, followed in 2005.

About this time, a particularly dangerous form of skin cancer he was diagnosed with. Of these, the public learned first but nothing. Federici was involved in the recording of Bruce Springsteen album Magic 2007, and then toured with the E Street Band in the USA. Only towards the end of this first part of the Magic Tour was announced that Federici to Europe would not the band for health reasons can accompany. Charles Giordano moved to his place. After the return of the band in the U.S. Federici played on 20 March 2008 in Indianapolis one last concert with the E Street Band, which he belonged for over 35 years.

Danny Federici died on April 17, 2008 at Memorial Sloan -Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He left behind his wife, one son and two daughters. Springsteen's next album Working on a Dream was dedicated to him.
