Danny Moss

Dennis " Danny" Moss ( born August 16, 1927 in Redhill, Surrey; † 29 May 2008 Perth ) was a British jazz musician (tenor saxophone).

Moss, son of a toolmaker, the saxophone playing brought in as an autodidact. After school, he first played in the quintet from 1943 by Wally Roger. After military service from 1945 to 1948, where he played in a military band, he became a member of the Vic Lewis Orchestra, then with Tommy Sampson, from where he was engaged by Ted Heath with seven other musicians. Then he played with Johnny Dankworth, with which he in 1959 at the Newport Jazz Festival occurred, but also with Alex Welsh. In 1962, Dankworth finance no fixed band more. Moss therefore worked with Humphrey Lyttelton. Since the mid- 1960s he played mainly with his own quartet, and often accompanied his wife, singer Jeanie Lambe. Since 1970 he has also been active for Alexis Korner's CCS. In addition, he recorded with Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Sarah Vaughan and Rosemary Clooney. In 1980 he was one of the founding members of the Pizza Express All Stars, with whom he also appeared at the jazz festival in Nice, but also played in the big band of Charlie Watts. He left in 1989, with his wife in Australia, where he successfully played on tour since 1983. In 2003, he played a highly regarded Duoplatte with Stan Tracey. The bassist Danny Moss Jr. is his son.

Moss felt at home in the tradition of Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster. The Independent calls him one of the handful of top tenor saxophonist from the UK.
