Danny Thompson

Daniel Henry Edward ' Danny ' Thompson ( born April 4, 1939 in Teignmouth, Devon ) is a British jazz bassist who has played with a variety of known folk and rock music performers together.

Biography

Thompson was born in Teignmouth in southern England. After his father had died in World War II, he moved at the age of six with his family to London. At his school, he played football and took lessons for guitar, mandolin, trumpet and trombone, but eventually specialized in bass.

At the beginning of his career was Thompson's main interest in jazz, he played for a short time in the band of British jazz saxophonist Tubby Hayes. In 1964, he joined Alexis Korner 's Blues Incorprorated on then, where he stayed for three years. In 1967 he left along with drummer Terry Cox Korner's band to join the folk jazz band Pentangle. He also had a trio with guitarist John McLaughlin and the woodwinds Tony Roberts.

In addition, Thompson began working as a session musician for various bands and musicians. After Pentangle had separated in 1973, he intensified this work. When the band started in 1984 a reunion, he was back on the field again, returned to her in 1986 but again the back. Thompson published in 1987 then his solo debut Whatever, Whatever Next followed in 1989. In the 1990s he began with the ( unrelated ) Richard Thompson to tour and, in 1998, together with Peter Knight an album.
