Danubian Plain (Bulgaria)

The North Bulgarian physical- geographical region Danube Plain ( Bulgarian Дунавска равнина / Dunavska Ravnina ), together with the slightly higher and older, northern Bulgarian ( Moesian ) highlands north of the Balkan Mountains, the northern Bulgarian plate, one of the four main landscape zones of Bulgaria and part of an extensive lowlands in southeast Europe on the lower course of the river Danube. North of the Danube, the Danube Lowland is called Wallachian Plain and has a large expansion.

The northern Bulgarian plate occupies 28 % percent of the entire territory of Bulgaria.

Location and subdivision

While the Bulgarian Danube plain in the north by the Danube, is clearly delineated in the west by the river Timok and on the east by the Black Sea, it is in the south by the precursors of the Balkan Mountains, the so-called Vorbalkan, with its numerous canyons and valleys is difficult to define. In the south the approximate boundary runs along the northern foothills of the mountains and the following surveys: Wruschka Chuka, Weneza, Schiroka Planina, Dewetaschko Plato, Tarnovo survey, Preslav Planina and to the north of the valley of the river Kamtschija. Within these limits the Danube Lowland occupies an area 31,500 km ², with a length of 500 km and a width of 20-25 km in the west and up to 120 km in the eastern part.

The northern Bulgarian plate is divided into three parts:

  • Western part, between the rivers Timok and Wit
  • Midsection, between the rivers Wit and Yantra
  • Eastern part, between the river Yantra and the Black Sea
