Danubian Principalities

The term Danubian principalities were referred to the 19th century, under Ottoman suzerainty principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. The term is still used in historical accounts, which refer to both principalities.

Structure

1861 were both principalities the Principality, and later Kingdom of Romania.

  • The lying between the Carpathians and the Dniester Moldavia: Its core area is one of Romania (see Moldova ( region ) ).
  • Bessarabia and the Snake Island came to Russia in 1812, a small part ( Cahul, Ismail and Bolgrad ) 1856 back to the Principality of Moldavia, 1878 back to Russia, the Snake Island to Romania.

  • 1940, the occupation by the Soviet Union, they divided it into the Moldavian SSR, this was a narrow strip of land beyond the Dniester affiliated ( Transnistria), independent in 1991 as Moldova,
  • The coastal zones ( Budschak ) and the region around the Ukrainian SSR Hotin was affiliated. 1991, Ukraine became independent
  • The south of the Carpathian Mountains and north of the Danube opposite Wallachia: belongs to Romania
