Danzig gulden

The Danziger Gulden ( XDGG ) was from 1923 to 1939 the currency of the Free City of Danzig. It was divided into 100 cents.

History

With the entry into force of the Treaty of Versailles on 10 January 1920 Danzig was separated from the German Reich and the " free city ". Although in November 1920, negotiations took place between Poland and Danzig on the introduction of a common currency, the paper marks first remained the official currency. The city gave out some series denominated in Mark emergency money, but in the course of the hyperinflation of 1923 were completely worthless. Poland and the Government of the Free City of Danzig had agreed on 22 September 1923 in Geneva on the introduction of a new currency, which was considered by the Polish side as a precursor of a common currency. According to the Senate decisions of 20 October and 20 November 1923, the guilder was introduced as the new currency on 26 October 1923. At first it consisted of a single cash certificates, which are also referred to as "the guilder ." On 18 December 1923, the German currency was abolished and the guilder legal tender. In circulation coins came from nickel, silver and gold. A Danziger Gulden had the value of 1/25 of the British pound, the 25 - guilder piece corresponded to a Sovereign and contained 7,322 grams of fine gold. Most of the coins were designed in the Berlin Mint, some issues were minted in the coin Utrecht.

The Danziger Gulden was temporarily released from the system installed at October 19, 1923 Danziger Zentralkasse AG - until the establishment of the Bank of Gdansk on 5 February 1924.

The 2nd Coinage Ordinance of 1924 altered the binding of Danzig gulden. Since then corresponded 1 Danziger Gulden 0.292895 grams of pure gold. The 3rd Coinage of 1931 reduced that value to 0.1687923 grams ( gold value of a guilder today under disregarding the purchasing power changes: € 5.259 ). Thus, the Danziger Gulden was adjusted to the Polish zloty. In July 1938, the official value of 100 Danziger Gulden was around 47 Reichsmark. The Danziger Gulden was the official currency of the Free City of Danzig was to the annexation by the German Empire in 1939. Coins and banknotes
