History

The county of Gdansk was established in 1815 in the province of West Prussia by the Kingdom of Prussia. It included the northern part of the province on both sides of the mouth of the Vistula, and had at its foundation an area of 7735 km ². The seat of the provincial government was in Gdansk. West Prussia was incorporated in 1829 to 1878 with the province of East Prussia, a province of Prussia, who belonged to the German Empire since 1871. After the end of World War II, the government district of Gdansk was dissolved together with its circuit structures. Under the terms of the Versailles peace treaty a part of the administrative region fell to Poland, from another part of the League of Nations Mandate Free City of Danzig was formed and a part of the governmental district remained with the German Reich.
