Darda, Croatia

The community Darda ( German: Lanzenau ) consists of the four villages Darda, Mece, Ugljes and Svajcarnica in the north - east of Croatia. It is a part of the County of Osijek- Baranja. In the municipality of about 7000 people live several ethnic groups, especially the Croats, Serbs, Hungarians, Roma and others.

The main economic activity of the fertile municipality is agriculture with the conglomerate Belje dd as an engine of the region.

Location

Geographically, this community is not only because of the short distance (10 km) to Osijek, the seat of the County of Osijek- Baranja of great importance, but also because the road and the Croatian railways that run through Darda, Osijek connect with Hungary. Darda is also with the communities Bilje and Čeminac in the southwestern part of Baranja, its history thus stands out from that of the adjacent Slavonia.

History

The strategic importance of this area has long been known, as early as the Romans used to Darda as a strategic connection point between Osijek and Budapest. The first documents in which Darda was mentioned, dates from the year 1410. Darda that time was the property of Ladislav Sigetti. But the oldest inhabitants directory Dardas was only published in 1690 and it shows that at that time have lived in this area 75 families.

Settlements and population

Today is the Darda municipality comprised of four settlements, in which a total of 6,908 inhabitants ( 2011 census ).

The four settlements are called:

  • Darda ( 5,323 inhabitants)
  • Mece ( 882 inhabitants)
  • Švajcarnica (196 inhabitants)
  • Uglješ (507 inhabitants)

In the municipality of Darda people live different nationalities:

In addition, in the municipality of Darda three faiths are represented, the Roman Catholic, Orthodox and Jehovah 's Witnesses.

Economy

Economically speaking, in the municipality of Darda Belje the most important company that is engaged in the manufacture of food. Part of the inhabitants Dardas leads small farms ( family farms ).

Education

Since the community Darda is not particularly large, there is only one primary and secondary school and kindergarten Radost. But Darda support the students and in their further schooling through scholarships.
