Dardanus is an opera in a prologue and five acts by Jean -Philippe Rameau (music ), with a libretto by Charles -Antoine Leclerc de La Bruère.

Action

Dardanus is at war with King Teucer, who has promised to give his daughter to the prince Antenor Iphise wife. Dardanus and Iphise get to through the mediation of the magician Isménor know and fall in love. Dardanus fought a monster that threatens Teucers Kingdom and thereby saves the life of Antenor in its unsuccessful attempt to kill the monster. Teucer and Dardanus make peace and Dardanus married Iphise.

Formation

The original libretto of the diplomat and poet opportunity Leclerc de La Bruère loosely based on the Greek myth of Dardanus. The first version of the opera 1739 experienced only a few performances because of the weaknesses of the plot. Rameau worked the opera then in 1744 radically to: only the first two acts have remained largely unchanged, while the rest of the piece was loaded with a lot more drama. Rameau described the second version, consequently, as nouvelle Tragedie. 1760 was still a second, smaller Makeover, in the accounted for the prologue.

Music
