Darfield, New Zealand

Darfield is a municipality in the Selwyn District of the Canterbury region on the South Island of New Zealand. It is located 45 kilometers west of the outskirts of Christchurch on State Highway 73, the The great Alpine Highway. In Darfield also traveling on the Midland Line TranzAlpine holds. At the 2006 census, the town had 1,485 inhabitants.

Darfield 's most important town between Christchurch and the West Coast. He is often called "The township under the nor'west arch", the name derives from a cloud bow, the west of the village on the otherwise clear sky forms. It is formed by condensation of water vapor, which is worn in the Southern Alps to the top.

Darfield is located in a multifunctional agriculture and cattle breeding area. It is the starting point for excursions to the Waimakariri and Rakaia Rivers, and in the Southern Alps and a popular launch site for hot air balloons.

On September 4, 2010 Canterbury region was hit by a severe earthquake. The epicenter was located in the area of the town of Darfield, but the greatest damage caused the earthquake in the town 40 km east of Christchurch.
