Darien is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia. The city is located in McIntosh County and is the county seat ( county seat ). It has 1719 inhabitants ( 2000).

Geography

Darien is located at the mouth of the Altamaha River into the Atlantic Ocean, with exquisite harbor.

History

1721 the British established three kilometers east of Darien, a frontier fort called Fort King George, but that had to be abandoned already in 1727. 1736 was followed by a re- trial settlement of Scottish settlers under the leadership of James Oglethorpe. From the settlement today Darien, the Savannah, the second oldest city in Georgia is thus created.

Darien was second before expansion of the railways cotton port in the Union.

End of the 19th century Darien has been described as a silent place, with 1543 inhabitants in 1880, and was the residence of a German consul.
