Darin Allen

This Eric Allen ( born January 5, 1965 in Columbus, Ohio) is a former boxer from the United States, amateur world champion at middleweight in 1986 and world title challenger the IBF light heavyweight in 1997.

Amateur career

Allen in 1985 American middleweight champion, while also the reigning National Golden Gloves champion and future IBF world champion William Guthrie defeated in the semifinals. He was then invited to the 4th World Championships 1986 in Reno, where he and impressively against Riquerne Berron from the Dominican Republic (5-0 ), Nusret Redžepi from Yugoslavia (4:1), Julio Quintana of Cuba (5-0 ) Henry Maske from East Germany ( 4-1 ) prevailed and thus won the gold medal in the middleweight division.

Subsequently, however, began a series of defeats that threw him from the leading rankings. Among other things, he left the semi-finals of the U.S. Championships in 1987 against Joe Lipsey and lost at the 10th Pan American Games in Indianapolis in the first fight by KO in the first round against Ángel Espinosa from Cuba. Allen declared himself with the lack of ability to be able to adapt to the style of fighting an opponent ( "When i used to go into a fight, i had one style. Did If did not work, i had fold, i had quiet", Interview with the Lexington Dispatch of 7 July 1988).

Allen then worked under professional guidance to these deficits and has appeared in mid-1988 again impressive in appearance, when he qualified for the Olympic Trials in July, the national selection to participate in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. He only lost in the final against Anthony Hembrick why was denied him an Olympic appearance. However Hembrick had little luck at the games; because he missed the bus from the Olympic village to the competition site and thus did not appear to his fight date, he was disqualified and thus different from a fight.

Professional career

Changed even in 1988, Allen turned professional and won seven consecutive fights, including against the undefeated Eric Cole ( 4-0) and Gino Calvillo (4-0 ). In May 1990, he suffered his first defeat when he by TKO was defeated by James Williamson ( 9-4). In October of the same year, he also defeated just on points against Keith Providence (6-0 ).

Then he remained unbeaten in 17 fights. Here he succeeded in victories against Armando Rodríguez ( 24-4 ) from Venezuela and the German champion Andreas Marks. On July 19, 1997, he was then given a world title opportunity the IBF light heavyweight against William Guthrie ( 23-0 ), whom he had defeated at the U.S. Championships in 1985.
