Dario Simoni

Dario Simoni (* 1901; † 23 May 1984) was a native of Italy American art director and production designer, who twice won the Academy Award for Best Production Design and more was twice nominated for an Oscar in this category.

Life

Simoni started his career as an art director and production designer in the film industry in 1949 with films like The Small Back Room and That Dangerous Age and worked until 1974 in the production of 34 films.

His first Academy Award for Best Production Design Simoni won in 1963 with John Box and John Stoll for the color film Lawrence of Arabia ( 1962) directed by David Lean with Peter O'Toole, Alec Guinness and Anthony Quinn in the lead roles.

At the Academy Awards in 1966 he won the one with box and Terence Marsh his second Oscar for Best Production Design in the color film Doctor Zhivago ( 1965) by David Lean with Omar Sharif, Julie Christie and Alec Guinness, on the other hand, he was with John DeCuir and Jack Martin Smith was nominated for an Oscar in this category for the period film Michelangelo - Agony and the Ecstasy ( 1965) by Carol Reed with Charlton Heston, Rex Harrison and Diane Celento in the lead roles.

In 1968 he was again nominated DeCuir, Lorenzo Mongiardino, Elven Webb, Giuseppe Mariani and Luigi Gervasi for an Academy Award for Best Production Design and indeed for The Taming of the Shrew (1967 ) after the eponymous stage play by William Shakespeare, directed by Franco Zeffirelli with Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and Cyril Cusack.
